Newport’s Attractions

Newport is a Mecca for colonial history, national and international yacht racing, museums, majestic mansions, the gilded age and US Naval History. Newport is the site of the first gas fueled streetlight and boasts the oldest synagogue in the nation. Did you know that the colony of Rhode Island was the first colony to denounce the British Crown and declare independence on May 4, 1776, two months prior to the July 4 declaration? Listed below are many of the attractions offered by this sea side community.

Mansion tours- Several of the Preservation Societies holdings, The Breakers, The Marble House, The Elms, and Rosecliff, along with Astors Beechwood, Chateau-sur-Mer and Belcourt Castle all offer tours but the number is limited during the winter. Newport has more historic homes than any other city in the country.

Newport Tennis Hall of Fame - With grass courts was home of the earliest National Lawn Tennis Championships and the first National Open Tennis Championship in 1915.

St Mary’s Church- Location of wedding for John F. Kennedy & Jacqueline Bouvier  Kennedy

The Old Stone Mill - The builder of this mysterious tower is unknown, to this day

Newport’s famous 3 _ mile Cliff Walk

Trinity Church - Built in 1726 was a place of worship of George Washington , he sat in Box # 81.

Bailey’s Beach- One of the most exclusive private beaches in the country. However locals can swim among the elite by access of Rejects Beach adjacent to Bailey’s.

Brenton Point State Park and the ocean drive- Experience the awesome power and beauty of the open ocean as you cruise the southern most point of the island  via Newport’s ocean drive

Ft. Adams & State Park — Ft Adams was built in 1808 with the anticipation of the war of 1812.  The mission of the fort was to protect the city from invasion by way of the east passage of Narragansett Bay. The British created a blockade of the coast line but did not attack Newport as expected.

Hammersmith Farm- The once summer home of Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy can be viewed from the water during any of Newport’s boat tours

Other attractions include Newport Playhouse, Newport Grand (slot machine gambling), Seal tours of Narragansett Bay,  Newport Yacht Club, Ida Lewis Yacht Club, Newport Vineyards and Newport Dinner Train.
